Breaking Northcrest News!!!

The ladies over at the Hoe and Hope Garden Club have just announced the entries into the design contest for the new Northcrest Sign. There is a wide range of ideas, so go check them out HERE. Many feature a great "retro" sense and feature iconic materials and motifs that really convey what our neighborhood is all about.

From a personal viewpoint, if the sign does not integrate elements from the original Northcrest logo, it is not really a contender in my book. No matter how you feel, make sure to come down to the Club this Saturday and vote on your favorite if you live here in Northcrest. Great job ladies and I can't wait to see which design wins!

Speaking of this Saturday, not only can you vote on the new sign at the Club, but you can also shop! This Saturday is the annual neighborhood yard sale and in addition to a giant flea market down at the club, numerous homes around the neighborhood will be selling everything you can imagine. There are always some great mid century modern treasures to be found! Plus, we will be grillling burgers and so forth down at Sale Headquarters (aka Northcrest Swim and Tennis Club) around lunch time.

Take a look HERE to see all the participating houses.....We will see you on Saturday!

  1. I hate to say it but I am not a fan of any of the sign designs. I should have submitted some of my own designs that incorporated the original logo. Oh well.

  2. Actually let me rephrase what I just said. I am not a fan of any whole design that has been submitted. I do like a lot of the elements that were used but each one has something I would like to change. That's me being a picky designer I guess.

  3. That is a shame...I think there are a number of nice designs that both incorporate original aspects of the logo and utilize classic MCM materials. I guess it is always easier to comment from the sidelines rather then get involved in a solution. I'm just glad to see the rose go bye bye.

That being said, I look at the sign designs as SCHEMATIC designs, something you would present at the first meeting with a client. I think it must have been difficult for the sign designers to all come up with ideas because of the lack of a formal and definitive program. And overall, I think there are some strong concepts.

I do wish that The Garden Club considered a design charette, where a COMMUNITY OF IDEAS could be developed, which also would demonstrate how incredible our neighborhood is when we all work together. There is a lot of talent here. It would have been amazing to tap in to that collectively instead of competitively. I almost feel sorry for the poor soul who wins, because there will be a lot of sideline comments. I will try to support any winning design. I am also glad to see the rose go bye-bye.

    Cheers! -Kathi/Kathleen
