May You Stay, Forever Young

Our little blog has once again spread its wings and left the nest. First it was the awesome AllModern contest we were able to do (we gotta do another one of these!). Now our blog has been featured on the homeownersinsurance.org website’s article entitled “50 Do-It-Yourself Blogs: DIY Must-Reads for Home Improvement Projects". We are noted as bringing “you the 1950’s in all their shiny glory”. How cool is that…thanks and there are many other great links on the list so go and check it out!

So how was everyone’s long Memorial Day Weekend? If you were anywhere near Northcrest and not down at the Northcrest Swim and Tennis Club, you missed a great time. While the weather was a bit tricky, the rain seemed to hold off just at the right times. Saturday night featured a fun and very tasty Low Country Boil. Sunday night had an awesome potluck dinner where we all got to sample foods from the amazing chefs here in the neighborhood. Finally, Monday afternoon was a bright sunny afternoon featuring poolside grilling and a fun ice cream social for the kids (I think I saw some adults in the line as well!). It was fun catching up with folks, meeting so many new people, and hanging out with great friends.

A Rainy Spot During The Potluck
The highlight of the weekend for me was this single moment that occurred on Monday afternoon. During the middle of talking with a group of friends my attention was quickly drawn to the pool’s diving board. On it was a young little blond girl with bright pink swim floaties around her arms. She nervously and very slowly approached the end of the board. Her movement required lots of starting and stopping and a couple moments where this little girl trembled with nervousness. Her father waited patiently, treading water in the deep end, all the while encouraging her.

She would tell her father exactly were to be there in the deep end as she drew even closer to end of the diving board. Then she made it to the end, stood there frozen, peering over into what most have looked like an insurmountable obstacle to her, and with trembling limbs took the plunge into the pool. It was her first dive off the diving board and the moment she hit the water, just about everyone there at the pool launched into a huge round of applause and loud cheers went out for her. It was one of those little moments that are so touching to me. Just hearing everyone cheer for her and seeing her smile totally made me tear up a little. Even as I write this now and think back to this moment yesterday, it is a bit hard to hold them back again.

What this little girl did on Monday will be repeated all over the world this summer and certainly not unique to Northcrest. But, I live in Northcrest and if I did not, I would have missed in sharing this most amazing moment. Just when everyone lunched into cheers and applause for her, it was this great moment not only for her, but all of Northcrest. A moment like this really defines to me what it is to be a “Northcrester”. It is one thing to say you live in this great mid century modern neighborhood but it is a whole other experience when you really join the neighborhood. For me it is working down at the pool, others prefer the garden club, and many do it in there own way. We share this amazing space called Northcrest with one another. I can only encourage everyone to take the plunge like that little girl did this weekend and really get involved and help make Northcrest even better!
